Steamships supports three nursing scholars.

The Lae School of nursing graduated 62 registered nurses with Diplomas on Wednesday 9th December 2020 at the Lae School of Nursing.

Amongst the graduating batch of 2020 were three nursing scholars Matilda Kedek, Loreensia Angis and Kumono Cliff. The three scholars were recipients of Steamships scholarship funding through the Australia Awards PNG.

Steamships PR and Sustainability Coordinator, Misika Rea, was on hand to witness the graduation of the three Steamships sponsored students. “Health is a vital component of Steamships annual community engagement sponsorship, and we are proud to be involved in the country’s national health strategy which aims at delivering access to quality health care in Papua New Guinea”. remarked Ms. Rea.

The sponsorship is aimed at supporting well trained personal to deliver access to quality health care in the country. According to the student representative Tom Peter, this was the largest number since the program’s inception despite COVID-19.

At a time when there is an increased need for more medical workers, the collaboration between Steamships and Australia Awards to sponsor students studying nursing is vital. The final months of their course was a challenge despite disruptions to the normal classroom programs as a result of COVID-19.

According to the school’s Acting Deputy Principle Mrs Pauline Bomara, nurses play a vital role and this was shown around the world during the current pandemic.

Amongst the dignitaries present to witness the ceremony were Dr Kipas Binga, Chief Executive Officer of Morobe Provincial Health Authority, and the Health Secretary for National Department of Health, Dr. Osborne Liko who gave the keynote address.

Dr Binga emphasized the importance of training and that this was a priority of the Morobe Provincial Authority.
Dr. Osborne further echoed the importance of quality health care access in Morobe and Papua New Guinea.

Australia High Commission representative Lyn Bae commended the school as well as Steamships for support in 2020.

Corporate representatives included Lyn Bae, Scholarship Program Manager, Australian High Commission and Misika Rea of Steamships.

“I am privileged to be given the opportunity by Steamships under the scholarship program and look forward to serving the community,” said graduate Matilda Kedek.

The sponsorship is aimed at supporting well trained personal to deliver access to quality health care in the country.
