Steamships is aware of its pre-eminent position in the community, and seeks to play a full role as a responsible corporate citizen. The company provides financial support to a diverse range of community programmes and encourages its employees to become involved in these programmes.
Steamships has continued to be a Platinum sponsor of the PNG Business Coalition on HIV/Aids (BAHA) which is part of a major world wide initiative by the business community to promote awareness of and proper responses to the threat of HIV and AIDS through the workplace. Company staff have received training from BAHA and has developed a company policy on responsible workplace behaviour in respect of HIV and AIDS. The company also became a major sponsor of ‘Susu Mamas’ – a programme to promote responsible paternal and maternal health care. Infant mortality in PNG is staggeringly high and the Susu Mamas organisation seeks to improve this through proper training and health care.
