Overview
Commensurate with its
commitment to Papua New Guinea
and its position as arguably the
largest private-sector employer in
Papua New Guinea, Steamships has
continued to develop its staff, to
work at being an equal
opportunities employer that
provides a progressive workplace
for its employees, and to make its
employees proud to work for the
Company.
The existing Home Ownership
Scheme is being revamped to
provide greater flexibility for staff
and to make it still more attractive
for citizen employees to build their
own long-term financial stability
with considerable assistance from
the Company.
As part of Steamships’ commitment
to its employees’ well-being, the
Company continues to provide
low-interest loans for school fee
commitments, and to encourage
staff members to be fiscally
responsible by not over-extending
themselves by borrowing beyond
their means to repay.
The Company has, once again,
continued to support senior
Shipping Officers in receiving
additional training at the Madang
Nautical Training College to
enhance their skills in the
International Safety Standard in
Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). The
success of this has been noted in
the report on the activities of the
Shipping and Transport Division.
In-house and external training
courses were well attended, with a
total of 820 people attending the
in-house courses. These courses
include computer training,
management development (in
particular continued development
of the GRID programme) and
Occupational Health and Safety
training, as well as industry-specific
courses relevant to individual
divisions. External courses were
also offered to senior employees,
including, for the first time,
attendance at the INSEAD business
school campuses in Singapore and
Fontainebleau in France, sponsored
by the Swire Group.
As part of the Company’s drive to
improve the quality and relevance
of training for staff development,
the training programme is being
pushed out to divisions in 2005,
with central co-ordination and
monitoring being provided at group
level. This will increase the
flexibility of divisions to structure
more targeted training for the
benefit of the Company and staff.
